As I Let My Mind Wander...

I sit pondering the strong currents which guide us in the directions we were destined to take. With each passing day the artist inside strives to paddle harmoniously against these currents that guide. We will always push against the paradoxes of society. We must push them, for if we resist its mighty pull will take us along the path of the normal being, the path we have rebelled against while those around us floated on by down the river of societies acceptance.

As I let my mind wander among those thoughts that come and go like the shadows of the days past gone, it carries me along only to lead me to the doorstep of attraction. So I stand patiently, will I knock or will I go, the decision I have made many times before, this time it feels different. This door is unique, more compassionate than those opened in past lives. The intricate grain drives me closer to the essence it holds tight behind its magnificently intrinsic arches. Only one thing holds me back now, the key. A selfless search for a key into the vast unknown. A key to an aura that is not often stumbled upon. Will this dauntless search cease or will it continue allowing my mind to gaze upon its grace forever lusting for glimpse into the serenity it bears?

Incandescent Innocence

When you take the journey of life everyone is bound to lose his or her innocence. It is a barrier between youth and the corruption of society. Innocence holds us back from growing up, forever in our memory always there to remind us of the yester years. We must lose it to become an adult; it keeps us imprisoned in the cradle of security keeping us mentally youthful. Innocence is a sturdy locked gate, keeping us from seeing the struggles and hardships of those wiser than us. Those that refuse to lose it find themselves lost in a world without innocence. Society, drugs, sex, music, friends, freedom cause this innocence to leave us always fishing for more to be lost. Eventually to drift away by the forceful hand of lust and greed, keeping us ever ready for its lingering existence to finally end. The more it fades from us the more we see it in those younger than us, but it slowly fades from them too. This innocence is unfortunately often lost at a younger age as the decades fade, those who once would have played house now are in gangs and have to just fight to survive, fully immersed in the grunge atmosphere of the cold streets. This is not the way maturing is supposed to be.

Innocence has many faces. Innocence can be taken in many places. Only to lose its beautiful graces, potentially losing those youthful faces. Trading them for a ticket to travel down the path of wisdom. Constantly looking for that break, only to escape to a false freedom. Finally opened up to the world of false hopes and fake people. One day on their way to the steeple along side those who tried to save this innocence but this time separated by a thick wall of oak and lacquer. Ultimately leaving us buried six feet below the ground that once held our innocence strong in our cores. Leaving many remembered as mere whores.

Our Anguished Ocean

All my life I have longed for the day I will feel the ground beneath me. I will forever wash up and down the millions of sand swept beaches. That is all I will ever know. To the longest lengths, I stretch the world across, never to travel the lands my waters caress. To the deepest depths my soul plummets, only to rot in its emptiness for eternity. I sit day in and day out lusting for someone to cure me of this plagued duty I have been given. My caustic waters will cover this world till life releases its sturdy grasp. This place I have come to know as home now feels more like a prison now than a sanctuary. The seemingly endless amounts of creatures, which swim through me everyday, will never know this anguish I feel. They will only ever know me as the great provider, nothing more. My once untouched surface now flows endlessly, reeking of abandonment and ignorance. The land walkers, who used to play in my cleansing currents, now leave me riddled with waste and ashamed of my existence. Will they ever realize the pain they cause me? Will this endless journey I face ever end letting me rest in peace someplace other than this decomposing wasteland?

The Mysterious Man

For a second the world around me went blank, the only thing left was the ominous ricochet of enemy fire. My heart beat so hard that I was afraid of it bursting through my shivering skeleton. I look to the left and see to the faint outline of the last of my outfit, but he only looks to be half of a man, his time has come to an end. As his life is slowly drained from him, I feel my last glimmer of hope fade at his side. My fatal end looks to be just around the bend also. But then just as suddenly as it began the horrific vision had faded and all I was left with was the debilitating memory of that tragic April morning. As I regain my balance between life and my shattered mental state, my eyes fix upon the harsh reality I am now burdened with. The moist chill of the wind sends a shockwave down my body. Its bitter touch is almost enough to send me back into my lifeless comatose. I can feel every twitch my ravaged hands make as the grayish haze and icy air welcome me to a more familiar place. The place I have come to think of as home or at least all that’s left of its bleak subconscious realities.
The Delicate Balance of the Haitian Soul

The Haitian culture has been shrouded in mystery since before the first European conquerors lead by Christopher Columbus landed upon the island’s beaches on December 5,1492. Throughout the decades, the European invaders spread their religious views to the Haitian people, attempting to disassemble to the native religion to make way for their European ways of life without the interference from the aspects of native culture. This caused fractions of the enslaved Haitians to practice their religion in secret, thus bringing forth the creation of the vodoun religion, which was based around the merging of European and Haitian beliefs. This hybrid religion was primarily influenced by their ancient African heritage, which shaped their views of souls, spirits and the gods they chose to worship. By examining the vodoun religion, specifically its view of the soul and the connections to the zombi phenomenon, we are able to gain a better insight to the complications of Haitian culture.

According the to novel, The Serpent and The Rainbow, by Wade Davis, the vodoun religion is based around connection between man and the loa, the loa being the spirit messengers of the almighty god, Bondye or the creator of everything, to whom humans are unable to have direct contact with. The loa serve as the medium of communication between Bondye and the people of Haiti, making them the center of all prayer and worship rituals. To a believer of vodoun, natural objects do not possess the ability to have souls and every natural being has but one purpose, to serve the loa, which are defined by the vodoun religion as “the multiple expressions of god” (Davis 171). This sacred bond that is shared between humankind and the loa is strengthened by the vodounist’s recognition of all life, all material objects, and even abstract processes such as birth and death as these sacred expressions of God. The God Bondye, to whom the Haitian people view as the supreme force seated atop the apex of the pantheon, distant from all mortal beings. This distance is the reason why the loa are such a critical component in the daily religious interactions of vodoun, without them communication to Bondye would not be possible. After considering the importance of these supernatural beings in vodoun, it assists in understanding the idea of the soul in Haitian culture.

Although, you must first realize that the human form is much more than just an empty vessel for the gods, rather it is “the critical and single locus where a number of sacred forces may converge, and within the overall vodoun quest for unity it is the fulcrum upon which harmony and balance may be finally achieved” (Davis 181). These sacred forces are the concrete components of all human beings and can be broken up into four divisions, the z’etoile, the gros bon ange, the ti bon ange, the n’ame, and the corps cadavre, or human body itself. Haitian’s describe the n’ame as the “spirit of the flesh” (Davis 181), that brings life to the cells of the human body. This spirit is seen as a gift from god that’s energy is transferred back to the organisms of the soil when the corps cadavre passes from the land of the living to the land of the dead. The z’etoile component of a human is the spiritual aspect that resides in the sky rather than in the body, “it is the individual’s star of destiny, and is viewed as a calabash that carries one’s hope and all the many ordered events for the next life of the soul” (Davis 181). The final two components of a human, which make up the vodoun soul and are the major components in creating the foundations of the zombi phenomenon. These two aspects are known as the ti bon ange and the gros bon ange, which have been explained with a commonly used Haitian metaphor. “Sometimes when one stands in the late afternoon light the body casts a double shadow, a dark core and then a lighter penumbra, faint like a halo that sometimes surrounds the full moon” (Davis 181). The inner of these two levels, the ti bon ange, is the part of the soul that creates an individuals emotion, the source of all personality, willpower, and character of the soul. While on the other hand the outer layer, the gros bon ange provides the individual with the power to act, their constant source of energy. When relating the concept of soul back to the gods and spirits of vodoun, one can come to the conclusion that if an individuals actions or personality are altered in some way then a Haitian would see this as an action by the gods because they view the soul as the sacred expressions of god. This aspect becomes even more identifiable throughout the stages of the zombi phenomenon, where these aspects of the targeted individual’s soul are altered and possessed by the spirits of vodoun.

At first glance, to an outsider, the vodoun zombi phenomenon may seem to be the cause of the tetrodotoxin infused powder left on the doorstep of the intended victim. Upon closer examination of the cultural beliefs and importance of the vodoun soul to the Haitian people, an educated assumption can be made that there is more to it than Wade Davis originally perceived. In order for this anti-therapy ritual to be preformed, a number of steps must take place to determine an individual’s acceptability. First, their ti bon ange is judged when they are sleeping by the vodounists, who compare the individual’s life to the seven transgressions, which determine if the target’s soul can be sold to the society. These seven actions are as follows: ambition, displaying lack of respect, denigrating the Bizango society, stealing another man’s women, spreading loose talk that slanders or affects well–being of others, harming members of one’s family, and land issues (Davis 253). Once the ti bon ange of the target has been judged on these factors, only then can the anti-therapy ritual continue as planned. To a Haitian the zombie phenomenon targets their ti bon ange, which is displaced upon the possession of a loa persona. The loa are able to possess the targeted individual because of the belief that one’s soul “travels during sleep to experience dreams” (Davis 182), thus making it possible for their ti bon ange to be judged on its earthly actions and captured by sorcery, as a result creating a vessel for the loa to possess. During this possession the individuals ti bon ange has been separated from them, thus taking from them all personality and willpower exchanging it with that of the loa, which “to the believer, the dissociation of personality that characterizes possession is the hand of divine grace; to the psychologist it is but a symptom of an ‘overwhelming psychic disruption’” (Davis 178). Considering this, the only people who can be affected by the zombi phenomenon are those who were raised believing in its power to take an individual’s personality from them if they do not follow the proper, culturally acceptable way of living. Another cultural example of this phenomenon can be seen among the Australian Aborigines from The Anthropology of Religion, Magic, and Witchcraft, by Rebecca and Phillip L. Stein, where a performer holding a sharpened kangaroo bone, targets an outcast of the culture in a public environment (Stein 86). As a result, the targeted person goes into a shock induced trance because they were raised to think that once this curse was enacted upon them there was nothing a person could do to reverse its effects, leaving the individual helpless to die alone without aid from family and friends (Stein 86). Both of these examples require the individual to have been raised around their specific cultural belief system, without those beliefs the effects of these anti-therapy rituals would be non-existent. After considering this need for vodoun belief system to be present in order for the zombi phenomenon to exist, we learn that there are many complications within a society, which give the possibility for these supernatural events to occur within the islands of Haiti.

Based on Haiti’s vodoun religion which was born from the beliefs of their ancient African relatives, Davis was finally able to come to legitimate realizations about the zombi phenomenon. In the beginning before Wade decided to take an emic view into the religious beliefs of vodoun through the eyes of their culture, he was not able to see the supernatural power that the soul, spirits and gods of vodoun possessed. By understanding a culture from the viewpoint that they are influenced by, an anthropologist can then start to draw upon the elements of their own hypothesis and combine the gathered religious elements that are required in order to see a culture for all it is worth. Only upon closer investigation of these critical religious components shared by all those who follow vodoun, he was able to use the worldview and religious beliefs of Haiti to understand how the zombi phenomenon actually occurred, resulting in his complete understanding of this mysterious culture.
Alternatives and Problems with Animal Experimentation

Throughout history, medical research with the use of animal experimentation has cured and prevented many diseases that crippled the citizens of the United States. Animal testing in the past 50 years has positively influenced cures for diseases such as Alzheimer’s and polio. Based on the information I have gained by researching this topic for the last three weeks I am able to conclude that even though animal testing has helped in the past, now given the inaccuracy of the tests, the treatment of laboratory animals, and modern alternatives, animals are becoming increasingly unneeded in medical research today. Recently studies by the Food and Drug Administration have shown “Nine out of ten drugs that appear promising in animal studies go on to fail in human clinical trials” (www.fda.gov). In the modern era of medical research, many alternatives such as stem cell research, gene-studies, and the use of the three R’s have assisted in decreasing the number of helpless animals slaughtered every year because of animal testing.

The use of animals in medical research has helped in finding cures for many diseases that have plagued humans for the past decades. Unfortunately, animals and humans have many differences, which make tests done on animals less than accurate because of them. Obvious and subtle differences between humans and animals in terms of our physiology, anatomy, and metabolism make it difficult to apply data derived from animal studies to human condition, for example penicillin is toxic in guinea pigs but has been an invaluable tool in human medicine (http://www.aavs.org/researchProblems.html). This poses a problem to the health of humans because today animals are still being tested on even though species-specific results interfere in the process of translating animal test results and continuing onto the human testing phase. In the New England Journal of Medicine, Eric Topol M.D. states that the widely prescribed arthritis painkiller Vioxx appeared safe and even beneficial to the heart in animal tests, but was withdrawn from the global market in 2004 after causing an estimated 320,000 heart attacks, strokes and cases of heart failure worldwide – 140,000 of them fatal (1707). Even though these tests give researchers information on the effects the test drugs have on living organisms, these tests are burdened with the problems on species-specific results and are far less accurate than alternative methods. Another problem doctors and scientists have come across when using animals in laboratory test environments is increased amounts of stress and psychological problems induced by laboratory procedures. A University of Oxford professor, Georgia Mason, states in her article that “Some 50 percent of mice in lab cages develop stereotypic behaviors—functionless, repetitive movements linked to the frustration of important natural behaviors and thought to indicate psychological suffering” (105). Another study by The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine declared that routine features of the laboratory environment—isolation, confinement, social disruption, noise, and restrictions on physical movement—have been shown to be severely noxious for animals. (www.protectchandler.com). As a result the test subjects are not being tested in their normal relaxed psychological state and the test results may be affected by this abnormal lifestyle the animals are forced to live.

Animal testing often involves pain and suffering on the part of the animals. Recently a Covance lab in Chandler, Arizona was investigated and fined because of their treatment of test animals. “Undercover footage shows lab personnel violently throwing terrified monkeys into their cages, jamming feeding tubes into restrained monkeys’ noses, stuffing them into plastic restraint tubes, and swearing in the petrified animals’ faces” (www.protectchandler.com). Extreme mistreatment such as this is a main reason why animal testing is wrong because the animals being tested on cannot speak up for themselves and protest these tests. For example, many laboratories produce monoclonal antibodies for research or diagnostic purposes by placing antibody-producing cells in the abdomen of animals, often causing significant pain and distress as the cells produce large amounts of fluid (https://www.pcrm.org/resch/anexp/position.html). Everyday laboratory animals have to endure these painful tests without the ability to end the suffering they are forced to live with. A PETA investigation revealed the grotesque abuse of animals in laboratories at Columbia University, where baboons were subjected to invasive surgeries and left to suffer and die in their cages without any painkillers, and monkeys were forced to endure surgical procedures in which metal pipes were implanted into their skulls for the sole purpose of inducing stress to study the connection between stress and women’s menstrual cycles (www.peta.org). This example of tests done at Columbia University shows the cold hearted and unreasonable test procedures that closely impede upon the line between research and inhumanity.

In the last ten years medical research has been positively influenced by the increase of alternatives that do not require live animal specimens. The use of these alternatives in medical research will lessen the need for countless non-human animals that provide only species-specific results. One alternative is stem cells, which have the ability to develop into many different types of cells during early life and growth. “Stem cells in many tissues serve as a sort of internal repair system, dividing essentially without limit to replenish other cells as long as the person or animal is still alive. When a stem cell divides, each new cell has the potential either to remain a stem cell or become another type of cell with a more specialized function, such as a muscle cell, a red blood cell, or a brain cell” (https://stemcells.nih.gov/info/basics/basics1.asp). By using stem cells instead of animal testing, researchers can develop more species-specific results that can be used to accurately assist in curing disease in humans. Lawrence Goldstein Ph.D, a Howard Hughes Medical Investigator at the UCSD School of Medicine and a specialist in Alzheimer's disease research says, “Human embryonic stem cells can be used to develop a sophisticated understanding of how Alzheimer's Disease develops, what its causes are, and how new therapeutic drugs might be developed” (www.isscr.org/public/alzheimers.htm). This study shows potential in finding a cure or the means to a cure for Alzheimer’s disease without the use of non-human animals. Another alternative is Gene-Studies “in which researchers replace missing or altered genes with healthy genes. Because some missing or altered genes may cause cancer, substituting “working” copies of these genes may be used to treat cancer” (www.cancer.gov/cancertopics/factsheet/Therapy/Gene). This alternative gives researchers the chance to view the effects of a disease on the body and then they can accurately substitute in the proper genes to fight the disease.

These alternatives are not the only ways of decreasing the use of animals in medical research, there are also the three R’s that consist of Reduce, Refine, and Replace. “The concept dates back to 1959, when William Russell and Rex Burch of the Universities Federation of Animal Welfare in the U.K. decreed the "three R's"—reduction, refinement and replacement—as means of reducing the animal suffering inherent in many studies” (Goldberg et al. 84). The first R, reduce, means designing experiments that use the least amount of animals possible, while also giving adequate and accurate results. These techniques allow researchers to follow a single animal through the course of the experiment as an alternative to the traditional procedure: starting with a set of animals and killing one at each stage to determine the status of, say, its liver (Goldberg et al. 85). The second R, refine is practiced by designing experiments that involve the least amount of animal suffering. For instance, if an animal's body temperature drops below a certain point, it never recovers; the test can then be halted with no loss of data to spare the creature a long-drawn-out death. If an animal vaccinated against rabies and infected with the virus begins to circle, that is a sure sign that the vaccine has failed, and the animal can be humanely killed, relieving it of hours of agony (Goldberg et al. 85). Another method researchers use that uses refinement techniques is using painkillers and anesthetics to lessen the pain the animals have to endure during tests, which make the tests more humane. The final R is replace, which means entirely abolishing the use of non-human animals in medical experimentation. “Finding certain replacements--such as for the Draize test, which is extremely painful for the rabbits, because the eye is such a sensitive organ—has, however, required a focus on animal welfare. A decade ago some researchers began to perform the test on fresh eyeballs from slaughterhouses instead of on living rabbits. Although scarcely an aesthetic improvement, the alternative eliminated pain as well as the use of extra animals” (Goldberg et al. 86). If researchers and doctors that are currently using animal testing switch to the any of the three R methods, accurate test results can still be obtained but the animals that are treated so cruelly can be sparred because of them.

Thanks to these modern alternatives the future of medical research can slowly move away from the need of animal testing and experimentation. By researching this subject extensively throughout the past three weeks, I have changed my opinion on the need for animal research because the evidence and positives for alternatives surpassed those of the opposition. While there is still some need for animal testing, there is a bright glimmer of hope in the future to finally eliminate the need for animals in medical research. Even though these alternatives call for increased funding to utilize them, the costs for millions of animals will be deducted as a result and the animals that would have been used for brutal tests can now live unharmed.
Compose a digital photography series that conveys emotion, tells a story, captures a unique memory or builds interest through the use of fundamental photographic techniques. The focus of this showcase should be composition, contrast, hierarchy & aesthetic by combining talent and intelligence through the visual mind’s eye.

Solution: A glimpse into the compositional explorations in photographic studies ranging a vast spectrum of aesthetics. Included among the showcase are product landscape, portrait and abstract work from the progression of my degree. As Ansel Adams once pledged, “you don’t take a photograph, you make it.”
of every minute,

of every hour,

of every day,

we search for those moments of escape,

those moments that slow the pace of reality,

those moments when our pain,

our stress,

our lives become accepted,

and we cease to think,

halting our focus about what tomorrow will bring.

For during this escape all we have in sight is how we will get to our next escape,

our next dream away from reality,

our next hope filled aspiration...

All for what?

Do we wake up to stolen illusions of our failed responsibilities?

or...

Do we live above false realities,

become that which we dream,

survive among darkness,

through blinding winds,

only we can make this decision,

open to light or closed to dark?

escape into fiction or evolve alongside reality...

Selection of pages out of "A Graphic Obsession", a personal experimental graphic novel designed to conceptually articulate the expressive personality of Seymour Chwast, the godfather of illustrative graphic design. The novel is filled full of my hand lettered and illustrated typography and imagery, which in the final stages of the project were digitalized with color based around Chwast's colorful design palette.

This book’s sole purpose is to illustrate the life and work of Seymour Chwast by dividing his legendary image into a split personality of design & expression.

– DESIGN MINDED –

Seymour Chwast was born August 18, 1931 in The Bronx, New York. In his youth Seymour was exposed to many different areas of artistic expression, of these areas he found a connection to the styles illustrated in comics, thus establishing his creative foundations, in which his iconic style was forged upon.
In later years he attended New York’s prestigious Cooper Union where he met Milton Glaser and Edward Sorel, whom which together after graduating founded Push Pin Studios.

Push Pin Studios fostered a modern illustrative aesthetic that gave rebirth to Victorian, art nouveau, and art deco and could possibly have been one of the leading causes to the collapse of traditional modernism.

“Seymour is nothing if not a connoisseur of irony” -Steven Heller

Chwast unknowingly gave birth to a revolution in the design and illustration industry with his playfully fresh social commentaries that were brought to life by iconic visuals. His uniquely whimsical approach to design and typography helped shape the foundation of graphic prowess for over six decades. By appealing to a wide audience of critics, his works were widely spread among both the art and political world, this made Chwast a powerful asset to his team at Push Pin.

“I had no idea that Push Pin was going to be as influential as it was.”
*commentary

“I had no overview of how the studio work was evolving or what we were contributing to the field of graphic design.
*commentary

Most designers in history can define a philosophy that drives them through their trial and error lifestyle however, Chwast on the other hand believes only in conflict and contradiction. He divides himself into two sides, his design side and his expressive side. His design side looks for order within creative concepts, while his expressive side tends to ignore intellectual solutions, allowing for a more individual personality, with less structural pieces.

These two halves of a magnificent designer stem back to childhood, where as a boy Seymour was obsessed with comic books and animated films, whose style is almost instantly apparent in his design work. Some may see him as a laid-back, mild mannered, absent minded artist but in reality its the opposite. Chwast was in fact an industrious worker and relentless producer of quality cultivated designs that shaped the path the design world took in the 60’s and 70’s.

– EXPRESSIVE HEARTED –

Seymour Chwast entered the world
August 18, 1931
The Bronx, New York
A young boy immersed in a new era of art
his mind an adolescent sponge
absorbing the illusions of colorful abstractions
uninformed of his eminent potential
destined to become iconic

His illustrative style sprouted from the countless comic strips his imagination ingested throughout his childhood. This early exposure to art molded his maturing style and identified him as father of postmodernism.

They say he started creative revolution, setting blaze to idealistic realism while giving birth to comic expressionism. Never will the worlds of illustration and design forget this legendary “left-handed designer.”

Seymour
expressed political blasphemy
cultivated historical imagery
sculpted artistic generations
Chwast

“Seymour is his art; he is what he makes”. -Steven Heller, beloved friend and colleague
